Trees For Cities

Project type: Planting

Partner: Trees For Cities

Location: London

Project: tbc

Background

The effects of climate change are already being felt. We’re experiencing warmer, wetter winters, and hotter, drier summers, creating higher temperatures in our cities. Woods and trees are our allies in the fight against climate change and yet just 13% of the UK’s land area is covered by trees (compared with an EU average of 37%). To help reach the UK government’s 2050 target to become carbon net zero – we need more trees.

Trees for Cities works at a national and international scale to improve lives by planting trees and enhancing green spaces in cities and towns. They get stuck in with local communities to cultivate lasting change in their neighbourhoods – whether it’s revitalising forgotten spaces, creating healthier environments, or connecting children with nature.

Achievements

In 2021/22 Red Inc supported Trees for Cities in their project to extend the woodland of Tremorfa Park, Cardiff, Wales, increasing residents access to ‘wild’ areas.

Project benefits

Social impact: Studies have shown a correlation between higher levels of deprivation and lower levels of access to quality green space. Thus, increasing canopy cover in Cardiff will increase environmental resources for individuals with limited access to green space.

Environmental impact: It is hoped that increasing individual connectedness to nature will improve commitment to protecting the environment, encouraging future generations to continue protecting and increasing urban forest space.
