Supporting Indigenous-led Rainforest Protection in Guyana

Standing with the Wapichan: Indigenous-led Rainforest Protection in Guyana

At Red-Inc, we believe that Indigenous-led rainforest protection is one of the most effective ways to preserve vital ecosystems. Protecting forests isn’t just about planting trees – it’s about standing alongside the communities who have cared for these landscapes for generations.

That’s why we’re proud to support Rainforest Trust UK and their collaboration with the South Rupununi District Council (SRDC) and South Central Peoples Development Association (SCPDA). Together, they are leading a powerful initiative for Indigenous-led rainforest protection in Guyana, focused on the southern part of the country where the Amazon rainforest meets the Guiana Shield.

Why Indigenous-led Forest Protection in Guyana Matters

This remote and biodiverse region is one of the largest remaining tracts of primary tropical forest – over 90% intact. It includes the Wapichan Headwaters, a vital source of freshwater and habitat for endangered species like the Giant Otter and Giant Armadillo.

For the Wapichan Indigenous Peoples, this land holds not only ecological value but also deep cultural and spiritual importance. But it is under threat from illegal mining and deforestation.

The Wapichan Headwaters Conserved Area

To address these challenges, Rainforest Trust is supporting the Wapichan’s efforts to legally establish the Wapichan Headwaters Conserved Area, protecting 2.2 million acres of rainforest. This project is a landmark example of Indigenous-led rainforest protection in Guyana, aiming to secure land rights and ensure sustainable stewardship for future generations.

Two Decades of Indigenous-Led Conservation

For over 20 years, the Wapichan communities have mapped and monitored their lands, documenting local wildlife—including species new to science. Their deep-rooted knowledge and environmental leadership are central to this conservation model.

A Personal Connection to the Cause

Members of our Red-Inc team recently had the privilege of hearing from SRDC/SCPDA Programme Coordinator Kid James and Wapichan Leader Toshao Daniel Aguilar. Their presentation brought home the urgent need for forest protection and reinforced the core purpose of our Plant One, Protect One programme.

Yes, we plant trees. But we also protect forests. And we stand with the people best placed to do so.
